Tree Project
Your
donation of $20 will help us plant fruit trees.
We are in the process of developing a fruit tree nursery
in Creve with the help of Pastor Harris from the MEBI mission.
The goal is to be able to provide poor families with fruit
trees as a source of income and nutrition.
When Christopher Columbus arrived on
Hispaniola in 1492, it was an
island lush with tropical forest. These forests stabilized
the rich soils on the slopes of this mountainous country.
During the colonial period, many of the trees were cut down
to build ships and furniture. Forests were cleared
to make open spaces for agricultural plantations. Since
Haiti's independence in 1804 the nation has continued cutting
trees to fuel the cooking needs of the 8 million people who
rely on wood charcoal to cook every meal. Haiti is
now 98 percent deforested.
This deforestation has caused an ecological
disaster called desertification. The lack of trees
causes a lack of frequent rainfall. When tropical storms
hit the deforested mountains, the rainfall produces extreme
flooding which destroys homes, agriculture crops, and roads. In
2004 the second largest city, Gonaives was hit by Tropcial
Storm Jeanne and more than 3,000 were killed and over 100,000
were left homeless. Again
in 2008 four tropical storms hit Haiti causing similar disasters.
Our solution is to plant fruit trees.
Fruit bearing trees are not cut down to be made into wood
charcoal. Fruit
trees not only stabilize the soil and absorb carbon dioxide,
but also produce food and economic opportunities for families
and communities. Haiti's Hope is impacting the poorest
communities that live in Northwest Haiti by providing jobs
and economic potential. We currently work with Leslie
Harris' organization MEBI who has over 50 years experience
in seeding, grafting and cultivation of Breadfruit, Mango,
Avocado, Grapefruit, Orange, Lime, Lemon and Coconut trees
in Nothwest Haiti.
Your
donation of $20 ensures that a family will receive a fruit
producing tree that will give hope to Haitians for generations
to come.
