How You Can Help | Child Medical Care
Sadly,
many children die in Haiti from easily curable diseases,
parasites, and worms. The orphanages of MEBI in
Port-au-Prince and Creve provide complete care (housing,
food, clothes, education, and medical care) for about 60
children ages 3 to 19. They are called orphans, however,
most of them do have a least one parent. Tragically, those
children have been abandoned by the parent(s) because of
extreme poverty and inability to provide for them.
Occasionally
they will go back to their family if the economic situation
improves, however, many children are totally abandoned. They
are given to the orphanage who becomes their sole provider.
As these children arrive at the orphanage, they are often
in very poor health and very fragile. They frequently require
costly medical care. For example, a lymph node biopsy
for suspected TB along with the doctors fees can amount to
$400. A surgery for hernia repair or acute appendicitis
costs between $800 to $1100.
In the beginning
of 2009, a typhoid outbreak caused 20 kids to be infected
and a few were hospitalized up to 15 days. Even
though the hospital is mostly funded by a charity, the cost
for all the laboratory testing, transportation to the
hospital and medicines amounted to almost $1,500. Because
of Haiti's dire economic condition, it is difficult
for a local mission to become "self-sufficient." Every
mission tries to generate some income whereas it be through
the sales of crafts, through agriculture and the sale of
produce, sales of bread and ice…etc. But the local people
are extremely poor and do not have the resources to make
those businesses profitable.
The welfare of Haiti's poor
depends almost entirely on the generous giving from caring
and compassionate people. No donation is too small, please
consider partnering with us to help these suffering children.
